The Operational Ecology of our Branches

Sustainability is important to DZ BANK not only in our core business. We also work to minimise the environmental impact of our branches.

Continuously Improving Our Environmental Performance

DZ BANK is addressing the integration of environmental concerns into its operations as part of a wide range of activities. This serves to promote the careful and efficient use of resources within the company, helping to reduce costs. For DZ BANK, however, operating in an environmentally friendly manner is also a question of setting an example for employees and customers.

All the key figures reported below relate to DZ BANK in Germany and include all locations in Germany.

A key component of the environmental and climate strategy is the collection of environmental data. This data forms the basis for identifying significant environmental aspects, determining potential opportunities and environmental measures, and managing greenhouse gas emissions. The calculation methodology was carried out in accordance with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).

    Climate Strategy

DZ BANK has been working with other DZ BANK Group companies in the Environmental Competence Centre since 2014 to reduce its environmental footprint.

In the 2025 financial year, the DZ BANK Group developed an updated framework with binding interim targets and measures for its group subsidaries and set itself an overarching climate neutrality target for controllable emissions by 2045, with the possibility of offsetting any remaining emissions in the target year. Group subsidaries may also achieve a corresponding reduction in emissions more quickly on a voluntary basis.

  • The image depicts a panoramic view of a cityscape with a prominent roadway in the center, lined with thriving green trees and lush foliage on both sides, giving a vivid contrast between urban elements and nature. The city buildings in the background rise above the treetops, hinting at an urban setting interspersed with nature—likely illustrating the harmonious blend of urban living with natural surroundings. The scene is bathed in soft sunlight that could suggest either a morning or afternoon glow, adding a tranquil and serene atmosphere to the image.

    Environmentally-Friendly Mobility

Mobility is essential to our operations. As a central bank, we support the business activities of the independent cooperative banks, including through on-site visits. Face-to-face interaction with our customers and stakeholders remains important even in the age of digitalisation and virtual meetings. DZ BANK’s aim is to further reduce CO₂ emissions from travel. Public transport is the preferred mode of travel for business trips.

In the area of electric mobility, the conversion of the vehicle fleet to environmentally friendly electric vehicles is being actively pursued. By the end of 2025, 139 of 425 vehicles were already either fully electric or hybrid vehicles. The complete switch to electric vehicles is planned by 2035.

DZ BANK supports its employees in commuting between home and work by public transport in the form of a travel allowance. Since September 2020, DZ BANK has also been offering its employees the option, through ‘DZ-Rad’, to convert parts of their salary into a bicycle lease. To date, over 1,400 bicycle leasing contracts have been concluded at DZ BANK. The proportion of public transport users stood at 68.1 per cent in 2025.
